IHS Grant Fund

"It is remarkable how much can be accomplished if you don't care who gets the credit." - Harry S. Truman

The IHS Grant Fund is no longer accepting proposals for funding.

Larry Jones, president of IHS and creator of the IHS Grant Fund

Since its creation in 2001, the Institute for Humanist Studies (IHS) Grant Fund has awarded more than $1 million in annual grants to humanist projects around the globe.

Starting this year, the IHS Grant Fund is changing its way of giving and who it will be supporting. Now, in order to increase the impact of our small grant fund, we have decided to concentrate our resources on fewer but more comprehensive projects.

Once a project is decided upon by our board of directors we will invite qualified humanist organizations to bid on the project. Instead of soliciting applications, the IHS board of directors will seek out professional humanist organizations and ask them to bid on projects that the board wants to see implemented.

From Larry Jones, IHS President

The purpose of the IHS Grant Fund from the very beginning was to grow the humanist movement and make it a more effective agent of social change. We sought to do this in the past by giving small grants to existing and startup humanist organizations around the world in an attempt to raise the level of their functionality and put them on to a sustainable course.

We need only to look at organizations like the Secular Student Alliance, Camp Quest, Inc. and the International Humanist and Ethical Youth Organization to see the success of this strategy.

Now, in order to increase the impact of our small grant fund, we have decided to concentrate our resources on fewer but more comprehensive projects.

Once a project is decided upon by our board of directors we will invite qualified humanist organizations to bid on the project. Such projects may be funded for a duration of several years.

We think the change in strategy will not only be more beneficial to the humanist movement but will be more in line with our mission.

The Institute for Humanist Studies (IHS) promotes humanism, a nonreligious philosophy based on reason and compassion. Reproduction of IHS content is subject to terms of use. Website problems can be reported here.
