IHS Letter to the Editor: U.S. News & World Report
(re: Secular Europe)

[The following letter to the editor of U.S. News & World Report was authored by Matt Cherry, executive director of the Institute for Humanist Studies. Published 20 June 2005, the letter responds to a May 30 article, "European, Not Christian," that described Europe's trend toward secularism as "Christianophobia."

U.S. News & World Report is a weekly newsmagazine that reports a circulation of 2 million, with a "total audience" of approximately 10 million. Its major competitors are the larger Time magazine and Newsweek, though it is known to have a more conservative leaning than those publications.]

U.S. News & World Report
6/20/05

As a European living in the United States and working for freedom of religion and belief, I was astonished to read "European, Not Christian." Separating church and state does not equal "Christianophobia." As a result of this separation, America has a degree of religious freedom and diversity that is without parallel in human history. After centuries of religious conflict, Europe has finally embraced the surest guarantee of freedom and peace: the complete separation of religion and government.
