Peter Derkx studied English and philosophy in Utrecht, Groningen and Glasgow. From 1977 he was professor of philosophy and humanism to the Humanistic Training Institute and from 1989 to 2002, associate professor of history of humanism at the University for Humanist Studies. As of January 2003 he was appointed Professor of Humanism and Ideology. His special areas of interest are: theory of humanism as a philosophy of life;theory of evolution, humanism and meaning; meaning, happiness and good aging.
